They look pretty close to me

If you had to pick the Panny FZ28 or the Canon SX10 IS which would you pick?

Is it true there is an upgraded version of the FZ28 comming out later this summer?

Both cameras have approximately the same features and both should take outstanding pictures when handled properly.
From a professional standpoint, 99%+ of all real professional photographers (photographers who earn their living taking pictures) use either Nikon or Canon system cameras. Other camera systems (which are generally good picture takers), just don't quite make the professional acceptance they would like to have for a number of reasons.
In my business, I have used Canon equipment for quite some time with great satisfaction, not because Canon takes better pictures than Nikon, but because under difficult conditions, my experience is that Canon cameras last longer, hold up better, and require less repairs than Nikon.
You have good taste in cameras. You will do well with either of your choices providing you take a little time to understand and use your new camera properly.

From a professional standpoint, 99%+ of all real professional photographers (photographers who earn their income compelling cinema) use any Nikon or List system cameras. Additional camera systems (which are generally excellent picture takers), just don't practically make the professional acceptance they want to have for a number of reasons.
In my affair, I have used List gear for practically some time with splendid satisfaction, not since List takes surpass cinema than Nikon, but since below trying conditions, my experience is that List cameras last longer, hold up surpass, and demand less repairs than Nikon.
You have excellent go in cameras. You will do well with any of your choices as long as you take a modest time to know and use your new camera by the book.

Both are good cameras. However, for about a $100 to $200 more you can buy the Canon XTi which is a full fledged DSLR with a larger sensor and interchangeable lenses. Just having the larger sensor is justification for the DSLR. Interchangeable lenses are icing on the cake.

The learning curve for the G10 or SX10 will be 99% equal to that of the XTi.

Regardless of what camera you buy you really should consider taking a photography class.

Good luck!
