Fujifilm won a great many fans with its F30 and F31fd models, which combined slightly larger than average sensors containing fewer pixels than their competitors with some clever image processing, to produce some of the best high ISO images we’d ever seen from a compact camera. In fact, three years later, there are very few compacts we can think of that do a better job once the sun goes down.

While playing lip-service to the needs of low-light photography (and continuing to produce cameras whose processing give them a slight edge over their contemporaries), Fujifilm didn’t appear to make further progress in the direction the F30 had pioneered. With the F200 EXR, Fujifilm seems to suggest that it wants to regain its low-light crown, based on a novel sensor technology it has developed (explained on the next page). In a time when compact cameras are becoming increasingly commoditized, it’s interesting to see a company trying to use more than just marketing to differentiate its products.

And, even without its EXR cleverness, the F200 EXR is still a fairly well specified camera. It has one of the largest sensors used in any compact camera (it’s a 1/1.6″ type, which means it has a surface area of around 0.45cm2) combined with a lens that offers a very useful range, equivalent to 28-140mm in 35mm film terms. To put this in perspective, most DSLRs are supplied with lenses covering a roughly 28-85mm range. It’s not the fastest (brightest) lens in the world but it’s not excessively slow compared to its peers.

The F200 also offers image stabilization, which is one of the best features for ensuring consistently sharp images, along with modes that allow a reasonable amount of control over the camera and ones that take care of everything for you.

To sum up, the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS is one of the more impressive digital cameras available in the market targeted to the commercial consumers. It is very easy to handle with a user-friendly interface and an Auto Mode, which makes taking pictures easier. The image quality is also good and the color details accurate, making SD8800 one of the better point-and-shoot cameras out in the market today.

Buying a Digital Camera

Sad to say there that are more dishonest discount camera stores than you’ll find in almost any other business. Some of the popular photography magazines are cram full of ads advertising very low prices. What they don’t tell you is that you won’t ever actually get the camera for that price. Either they will add on $75 in shipping charges or they will be “out of stock” on that model, but they will have a more expensive model available of course. Sometimes they’ll tell you that the advertised camera is plastic in made in Taiwan, but for another $50 you can get the model made in Japan. Sometimes they’ll ship you the wrong item in the hope that it will be too much trouble to send it back. Shop in the ads at the back of magazines based only on the lowest price you see and most of the time you’ll be sorry.

There is a lot of things you can say about a digital camera, but nobody can say that they are not a lot of fun. Just being able to snap away without worrying about costs of film and see instant results is the greatest thing since the invention of photography. But please do all your friends and family a favor: just because you shoot more pictures, doesn’t mean they want to see all of them so pick out the best and only show those!

Some cameras work with AA size batteries, others come with a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery and adapter to charge it. Both systems have their merits. You can buy pretty powerful rechargeable AA batteries (2000mA), but still a Lithium-Ion battery specifically designed for your camera is likely to give better performance. If you choose a camera that uses a special battery with it’s own charger, getting a second one is probably the smart thing to do; you will one day forget to charge, stay away from a wall socket too long or take more pictures than anticipated. For other cameras you can get very powerful, but expensive, lithium disposable batteries, if you go away for longer, carrying one of those as backup could be a good idea. Personally, except for the most casual of shooter, I recommend a camera that comes with rechargeable lithium-ions, but be sure to buy a spare (or two) if you do heavy shooting.

A camera can do so much for you yet it gets taken for granted so often. Something that captures your memories should be cherished, unless it’s of bad quality. Your memories aren’t pixilated, fuzzy, and blurry are they? Well, we’re not talking about the bar in this hypothetical statement, but usually they aren’t. So why on earth would you settle for a less than adequate camera? the Canon Powershot SD990 IS is more than adequate and it also beats it’s predecessors like the Canon Powershot A590IS.

I’ll tell you why; price. Everything is so expensive now, sales taxes are being issued on the internet more often, tons of people are getting laid off, it’s all going to hell. Why buy a camera then, especially when a nice one like the Canon Powershot A590IS is so cheap? Well, simply put, we need to preserve the good memories to help us out of the bad ones. You can’t do that with a $100 dollar, poorly constructed, mini camera. You need an excellent camera and it isn’t even that heavily priced.

For $320 the Canon Powershot SD990IS will deliver amazing digital photographs with fifteen megapixels. FIF-TEEN. That is almost twice as much as the Canon Powershot A590IS, which has 8. Not to mention the face detection, an amazing recent new feature in most cameras. The face detector will even find the faces for you when you put it on self timer, amazing, huh? This camera is a steal in it’s truest and most legal form. Ok, I can hear the skepticism from across the room; “I don’t know what that means! I’m old!”. Ok, ok, I’ll slow it down for you.

The Canon Powershot SD990IS’s highest resolution is at 4416 x 2480, that is the highest resolution this camera can go. Yes, that is very big, larger a normal LCD wide screen computer monitor. More proof? Alright, 4x stabilized digital zoom, meaning, you can take a picture of that pimple on your prepubescent son’s nose and it’ll be in 15 megapixel definition still. Still not convinced? Easy printing and Red Eye correction. The camera will fix red eye for you, and can print the picture at the click of a button.

The Canon Powershot SD990IS is a revolutionary, affordable and entertaining camera. It pushes the envelope with it’s 15 megapixel and face detection. Be a professional photographer with 3 times less the price and make memories today. The Canon Powershot A590IS is good too if you’re really on a budget but I wouldn’t recommend it. Regardless, if you’re going to buy a camera, go Canon.!
